For the sixth day of Giftmas, it was all about picking out the perfect gift for him…
And when I asked about giving for men this year, I was met with some quite specific requirements including, but not limited to:
- Dad ideas, but no socks (a shame) or whiskey (fair).
- Fussy men.
- Men with no hobbies or interests (easy!)
- and too cool brothers.
as you can see, the scope is broad- and ruling out socks (of which I unfortunately am at an age where I appreciate a nice pair) cuts things down significantly. I jest, I jest! How hard can it be?! Fortunately, there are some gorgeous brands out there creating things for even the fussiest of folk- and not a tool bag, bottle opener, hip flask or cufflink in sight.
And I’ll start with Hilary Grant– because my goodness do they have some gorgeous things. A textile design and knitwear factory based in Orkney. Hilary specialises in pattern and truly outstanding knitted accessories; with their hats and scarves being some of the most timeless and expertly crafted I’ve seen (the colour selection alone is stunning, and how special to have one made so beautifully). Plus, their blankets are also exhibition-levels of gorgeous, and would make the most special gift.
One of my favourite discoveries when compiling this years guides was discovering Postcard Models. A family-based Kent company who ‘turn architecture into beautifully detailed miniatures’- creating small models of familiar and personal places, ready for you to build and create at home. I adore the ethos and sentimentality behind these, and the fact they’re also a gorgeous activity to sit down and take careful time over (especially if you have someone in your life who fancies trying something new). I haven’t come across anything like this, and think having a finished result on their mantlepiece would be so lovely.
I know fragrance can be a tricky one to get right, but if I’m being honest- most men I know love ‘some smelly bits’, as my nan would say. It feels a little inaccurate to boil Ffern down to the ‘smelly bits’ category- but if you’re looking for a truly striking scent, accompanied by storytelling and something a little out of the ordinary- their fragrances are some of the best. In our household we seem to now share them too.
Another thing that I think is always a safe bet- whether they’re too cool with painfully expensive taste or you simply aren’t sure where to begin- is with food. Whether that’s a self-made hamper (I’ve been known to pull together some good oils, jars and kitchen bits) or a cookbook with some dry ingredients ready to go- I don’t think you can go too far wrong. This year I loved discovering Goat Rodeo Goods and their genius seasonings (this roast potato one is, obviously, excellent) and Pump Street’s excellent chocolate coated orange slices; which I think Michael would be happy with as the entire contents of his stocking. Additionally, these miniature Bare Bones bars also make 10/10 mini gifts, and are some of the best chocolate I’ve had.
If there’s one item that I can almost guarantee would be a runaway success, it’s this tangerine keyring from Choosing Keeping. Of all the fashion items and accessories I have purchased this year, I am almost certain this keyring has garnered the most compliments. So much so, my boyfriend immediately asked why I hadn’t got him one too when I said I’d got one (he’s a big tangie lover) and their collection is exceptional. Also including a jam sandwich, pancetta lardon (I know), fried egg and slice of cheese- I think it’s a small but mighty present indeed.
Some other lovely suggestions for the fella in yer life!
- For the traveller, I love the Ace & Prince travel bag– which not only is gorgeous, but incredibly reasonable and super handy. I adore their bags, too!
- For any football lovers in the house, Michael has recommended this book as we approach another World Cup Year (dun, dun DUN). He has heard very good things about this, and keeps saying ‘I really want to read this’, so take this as your sign!
- For the music lover, I think a subscription to the Rough Trade Club (Discovery) is a great idea. You get their album of the month delivered directly to your door, which includes limited pressings, bonus content and beautiful artwork too. It could be a really great ‘let’s all chip in for him’ present too!
I’ve also added previous links to guides for the men in your life, if you need further reading too (as well as some extra picks below- I didn’t want to repeat ideas so there’s a lot to get stuck in to)!
