If you know me, you’ll know as well as hugely twee, collared and sorbet coloured dresses- I’m a bit of a fiend for t shirts. When I say fiend, I mean- I have a whole cupboard dedicated to them, so yes, I’m quite a fan. As well as your typical breton, band t shirts (it seems it’s not essential for me to buy one at every gig) and basics- I have a real love for finding new, independent t shirt brands with real stories behind them.
So, dear readers- meet Saint Kidd.
After being invited down to their pop up shop a couple of Saturdays ago- I was pretty excited to see what was in store. Created by a certain Dougie Poynter and Rich (with número uno hype man Dan also a big part of the equation) this is far more than just another pop up in East London. Situated next to my favourite record shop and around the corner from panini heaven (seriously Kahaila is unreal) before I’d even arrived, it had me at hello.
Now, I’m not talking Fruit of the Loom T-Shirts with transferred logos (no Comic Sans) here. These are tops with tales behind them- tales from the seven seas, inspired by William Kidd and pirate sea adventures- made by people who really blooming care. It’s not often you’ll meet a room full of people so passionate and excited about something (I think at one point I may have joined in with a squeal of excitement) but I’m pretty sure every person there was simply there because they loved it- a little Saint Kidd family if you like.
From the fabric, shape (come on, even to how the sleeve rolls), motifs, labels and background- there wasn’t a t shirt shaped stone left unturned. On top of that, they’re ethically sourced- even the damn washing labels have amazing messages on (you’re welcome Mama P ; ) – and on top of that, even the Union Jack behind the counter was Dougie’s own from a ship (like, uh, a REAL one)- the devil really is in the detail and I for one, am a bloody big fan.
