So! The time has come for the never-before-done and wholly unofficial ‘Best Beauty Picks of 2018’ list from yours truly…
Although the excitement surrounding this isn’t quite to scale as say, an Oscar- I did have quite a fun time looking back over some of the products that have withstood the test of time in my collection, the items I’ve revisited time and time again and the ones that simply never let me down- because they’re the ones to really look out for.
Plus, I love reading these kind of round-ups in magazine, and always find it so informative when discovering new products- so thought I’d pop my own together in hope it might help you find your new favourite for the New Year. I’d love to hear the beauty picks you’ve loved this year too, so add them below because I’m always up for a wonderful new discovery!
Best Brand – NARS
For me, NARS are just one of those brands that I come back to time and time again- offering everything from consistently good foundations, bases and colour. This year their Natural Radiant Long Wear foundation has been my daily favourite for glowy yet full coverage, as well as their Wanted Palette (which, from me, needs no introductive) and their Climax mascara, which came into 2018 with quite the bang- and for good reason too. All of these items are things I’ve used again and again (as you can see by the state of things even in the most photogenic of set-ups) and I’m very excited to have them in my collection going into 2019 too.
Best Scent – Honeysuckle and Davana, Jo Malone
This was arguably one of the hardest categories for me, as there have been so many scents I’ve loved wearing (special mentions go to Gabrielle by Chanel and Soleil Blanc by Tom Ford)- but with Honeysuckle and Davana coming out this year- it felt apt to include it here. Not only does it combine everything I love in a fragrance, from light warm floral notes to subtle citrusy undertones- it’s the perfect comforting feminine smell and feels like a heady balance of everything I love in a perfume.
Best Glow-Getters – Isle of Paradise Tan & Benefit’s Watt’s Up
Until this year I’d never really been a fake-tan person. I was always scared about the outcome and could never trust myself to apply the glow without ending up with orange hands and a biscuit-like cloud surrounding me- blame an all girls secondary school, perhaps? However this year I was introduced to Isle of Paradise by the wonderful Jules Von Hep (tanning KING to you and I) and I’ve not looked back. The first time I tried it out I honestly felt like I looked REALLY WELL (like adults say when you’ve just got back form holiday). It balanced out my skin tone and gave a subtle healthiness that looked as if I’d been on the green juices and popped back from a long weekend in the south of France- HEAVEN. For days when I haven’t popped on the ‘Paradise, I love Benefit’s Watt’s Up highlighter- and it probably gives the best glow of any cream highlighter I’ve tried. It’s light to apply and blends beautifully with any foundation- and also is brilliantly buildable too- meaning if you want to up the wattage, that’s not out of the question either.
Best Haircare – Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray & The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Shampoo
Okay so I’ve cheated a little in a few categories by sharing a couple of favourites- but seeing as they’re both different I thought it would be ok. Firstly, I’ve been a bit of a hairspray queen since about 2007 (blame MySpace and a side fringe that couldn’t be tamed with clips alone)- so I know a good hairspray when I see one. Although my requirements have changed in the last ten years (it used to be about cement levels of hold)- I now look for something that keeps things in place without looking greasy or gluey, and this Sam McKnight spray, although a little more indulgent, is bloody excellent. I’ve also adored this shampoo from The Body Shop as the perfect cleansing wash- without leaving any weight of residue to my fine hair- and smelling blooming fresh whilst at it too.
The Best Daily Staple – Mitchum Women Powder Fresh Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant
Perhaps not the sexiest category of the bunch, but worth a mention nonetheless- this deodorant from Mitchum has been my absolute favourite for forever and a day. Not only does it last for blinking ages but it also smells lovely (without being overpowering) and just gets the job done. Nothing glamorous by any stretch of the imagination, but a hard worker (especially when this gal is stressed) and one that I can rely on time and time again.
Best Brow Hero – Hourglass, Arch Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel
Although I’m not technically that fussy when it comes to brow products (just keep ‘em in place and I’m happy)- it was after using this brow gel from Hourglass that I realised what I’d been missing out on. For a bushy-browed gal like me, this is the perfect all killer not (much) filler product- evening out the shape and grooming perfectly, adding a little colour without creating crispy cartoonish brows. I like a bit of texture to my brows and this is the perfect balance of taming and keeping them looking tip-top all day.
Best Multi-Tasking Product – Clarins 4 Colour Pen
Oh I bloody love a novelty item- and even more so when it does a brilliant job too- well done Clarins! Although I’m not sure they make this exact one any more, they do have varying shades and I love the idea of having an all-in-one eye and lip pencil for on the go. On top of that, both pencils come in beautiful shades and last bloody ages, which shows you can have a bit of fun with a product and it still do a great job.
Best Moisturiser – Origins Original Skin
Although I’ve been a long time lover of all things Origins, it was in January that I first fell head over heels with their Original Skin moisturiser. Always in need of a brilliant morning moisturiser, this seemed to do it all. Not only does it smell zingy and delicious (a little like their Gin Zing range), but glides onto the skin beautifully, hydrating and then making for the perfect quick-absorbing matte base which is everything I need and more- 10/10 indeed.
The Best Skincare Product – Liz Earle, Cleanse and Polish
Okay, so arguably listing Cleanse and Polish as the best skincare product is about as surprising as saying your favourite band are The Beatles- but when you got a good thing going, who can you really blame? After being introduced to this product years ago via my nan, and then mum- this product is technically in my beauty-collection DNA. It’s a total failsafe all rounder of a product- removing everything from stubborn eye make up to layers of foundation and concealer, without ever breaking me out of triggering redness. It’s the little black dress of skincare, and I know I’ll always have it to hand because it never disappoints.
Best Cult Favourite – Glossier, Balm Dot Com
And last but not least- the cult favourite! Although I’m a bit fickle when it comes to following trends or jumping on wagons, this lip balm is a total staple in pretty much every bag I own. Not only does it stop my lips from cracking or drying out- but it tastes amazing, lasts for ages and if we’re going there- comes in cute-as-a-button packaging (not that that even matters). It might have a cult following, but that’s not without a cause.
I hope you enjoyed this little beauty roundup of the year- as above, do let me know the products you’ve adored this year too!
