The Investment Dress

(Sunglasses: Madewell, Dress: Topshop, Shoes: Topshop, Earrings: Whistles, Bag: Tidy Street Store (similar here)

It happened a couple of years ago when I picked up this Topshop number from Net-a-Poter in their annual summer sale. I’d pondered it since seeing it on everyone from Alexa Chung to Laura Whitmore (typically fickle, Ms Purvis), but was insistent, and determinedly frugal, that I waited until I could get it for a fraction of the price. Fortunately I managed to snap it up at about half price, and since then the cost per wear has probably halved yet again, and it solidly remains one of the most worn pieces in my wardrobe…

Fast forward two years, and I can say that this Morris-esque floral midi from Topshop Unique has done pretty much the same thing. Amazingly, I was fortunate enough to see it IRL on the catwalk in February, and it was one of the main pieces from their AW17 collection that I fell in love with (fortunately being one that was ready to shop too). It’s slightly eighties Pretty Woman shape combined with a more vintage inspired print makes it a slightly more playful version of the slinky midi tea dresses that have been everywhere this summer- and I stand by saying that the ’80s is the most underrated sartorial era for anything other than fancy dress (it ain’t just shoulder pads and lycra, y’all)! Having already worn it to a wedding with espadrilles, and again with sliders on holiday- I know it’ll serve me well for years to come, and have certainly realised that spending a little more on these kind of special pieces certainly pays off.
