The Summer Book Club Reading List

One of my favourite things about receiving my monthly magazine subscription every month is looking at their book recommendations…

Although admittedly I can be a little slack when it comes to getting those pages turning (and an unbreakable habit of buying books and then leaving them merely as display items on my shelves)- it’s the pleasure of actually getting together a solid list of recommendations to flick through- plus, even better when the sun comes out and summer starts to make an appearance.

So, in the last couple of weekends, when things have been a little more peaceful- I’ve been taking my blanket outside, sitting down and starting to get in to my ‘summer reads’. There’s something wonderful about laying in the grass, the sun out and a good book that is completely unrivalled, so today I thought I’d share with you four of the books I’m hoping to indulge in over the next few weeks, in case you were after some recommendations yourself…

The Almost Wife

Written by the wonderful Jade Beer (editor and writer extraordinaire at Brides magazine), the first on my list is her glorious debut novel, The Almost Wife. Perhaps it’s because I’m in full-on planning mode myself (that, or my genuine love of a great chic-lit read), but this book ticks so many boxes for me. Engaged or not, this book is the ultimate summer poolside read- telling the stories of three brides to be and their journeys from planning to the big day- where only two will make it up the aisle and only one will marry. Although I’ve not finished it yet, this book was one I could dive straight into and felt invested in the characters from the get go. To say Jade is an expert in all things weddings would be a total understatement, and I can’t wait to finish devouring this like a big slice of sponge end of an evening reception… It’s out in June, so do pre-order if you fancy a dreamy poolside read.

The Lido

The Lido is one book I’ve seen absolutely everywhere lately, and after seeing it on the wonderful Abi’s Instagram, knew it would be one worth picking up. Set in Brixton (you had me at south London), the book focusses on female friendship, belonging, community and finding your feet in a big city- with the relationship of 86 year old Rosemary and 26 year old Kate at it’s core. Deemed the ‘feel good debut of the year’, The Lido promises to make you laugh, cry and give you the warm fuzzies (Richard Curtis comparisons noted)- which sounds to me like a pretty perfect book indeed.

The Multi-Hyphen Method

For those of you that fancy a seasonal kick up the backside- be it for a side hustle, passion project or beating the burnout, my pal Emma Gannon is pretty much the expert and her shiny new book The Multi Hyphen Method is just that wrapped up in one neat (yellow) bow. A surefire injection of empowerment and motivation, Emma tackles everything from defining success, money taboos (and why it’s certainly not always about the dolla) and how ‘we can all channel our own entrepreneurial spirit to live more fulfilled and financially healthy lives’. This lady truly makes business an accessible topic for everyone- so if you’re in need of some digestible, un-intimidating, inspiring reading- this one is for you.

Dear Mrs Bird

Finally, the last book I recently picked up (after ordering The Lido) was the book ‘Dear Mrs Bird’, another debut by AJ Pearce. Having heard a few good things fizzing around online, I quickly swept this up after reading the bio- which describes it as a novel based in wartime London about a heartwarming female friendship at a time of trouble, as well as being ‘poignant and gloriously funny’. I can’t wait to get stuck into this, and will let you know how I get on (slash how many tissues I get through)…

What books have you picked up recently? Do share any of your summer reading list below too!

The Almost Wife sounds really interesting! I’ve been on Wedding Fever lately (despite nowhere near getting married lol), so I’m very intrigued with books like this at the moment. Personally, I’ve just been trying to read more classics lately and reading all the books I’ve still got unread at home. Really fun to see so many worlds I’ve never bothered to venture to before!

I finished The Lido recently and absolutely loved it! Dear Mrs Bird is also on my list but I have so many to get through I learnt it to my Mum to read first. I just finished Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton which was really great and I’m going to start Oh My God What A Complete Aisling next! An Irish Eleanor Oliphant… Another amazing read!

I love the look of ‘the multi-hyphen method’. I didn’t know it was Emma Gannon’s book, but now I know that I will definitely give it a read. I love all her podcasts xx

I am going to have to hunt down ‘The Lido’ because it sounds brilliant, as does ‘The Multi-Hyphen Method’. I wish it was a bit more Summery here! As you know I drift in and out of books all the time but I recently finished ‘The Female Persuasion and really enjoyed it. I’m currently reading Nora Ephron’s novel ‘Heartburn’ and am loving it, to the point I’m deliberately reading it slowly to draw it out a bit.
