In between our two adventurous nights in Abel Tasman and the move along down the south island to Kaikoura, we made a pit stop in beautiful Nelson for the evening. With just enough time to get a feel for the city, and of course experience the infamous Wednesday morning farmers market- we pitched up in a local motel, freshened up and wasted approximately zero minutes before heading out to scope out the golden pockets the city had to offer.
There’s something very charming and quaint about the city. It’s not that it feels sleepy, or even dated- but it feels like it’s restored so much of it’s originality and community that when you visit you almost feel like part of the furniture- with such a warmth and familiarity that you can just pick up and get straight in. From the houses nestled in the hilltops, to the city centre with it’s contrast of traditional Victorian inspired architecture, period inspired properties to the vintage neons of the local cinema- it has a charm from a time gone by, whilst still feeling exciting and full of gems too.
Although we were here for one night only, I’ve popped a handful of the places we saw and loved below- Nelson really is such a gorgeous part of New Zealand, and I truly hope I get to go back one day and see a little more…
The Kitchen New Zealand
After doing a bit of digging for breakfast spots (and then obviously seeing it on Kate’s feed) we opted to start our morning at the gorgeous Kitchen NZ. With options ranging from healthy bowls to fresh eggs and homemade loaves, we tucked into a delicious meal (alongside what I heard was delicious coffee) before picking up some extra cake for the road too. Such a friendly place with a seriously sunny menu.
Palm
Sometimes I feel like I gravitate towards independent shops in cities like I do to Domino’s after an evening out, but Palm seriously caught mine and Carrie’s attention and I’m so glad we managed to pop by. Stocking a huge selection of designers from local Karen Walker to more contemporary brands, we also discovered some amazing Kiwi beauty brands in store including the gorgeous Girl Undiscovered, which also came home with us.
Trouble and Fox
Another gorgeous shop situated in the cities Bank Lane, Trouble & Fox is a fashion and lifestyle store with some of the most brilliant brands all under one roof. Although not a huge store, you can easily while away a serious amount of browsing time here, with brands such as The Fifth Label, Veja and Scotch and Soda all here- as well as endless adorable stationary, accessories and beauty brands too. Spoilt for choice? Maybe indeed…
Nelson Farmers Market
Now, how could I mention Nelson without mentioning their wonderfully well renowned farmers market? Whether it’s rain or shine, this gem brings out so many of the cities best produce and craftspeople every Wednesday morning in the centre of Nelson. With fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, local delicacies and endless nick-knacks; from handmade ceramics to gorgeous blooms- it’s such a gorgeous way to spend a morning and really soak up some of the best of what the city has to offer.
Burger Culture
Finally, if like us you’re only flying through but need some supplies for the road, may I point you in the direction of Burger Culture. With fresh donuts daily from the coffee hatch in flavours ranging from raspberry sherbet, crème brulee and apple crumble- it’s a real gem and the perfect place for some treats to go.
Also! If modern (wearable) art is your thing, or vintage cars for that matter- it’d also be rude to not mention the WOW museum and Nelson classic car exhibition. With the museum being a bit of an icon in the city and an infamous must visit, it felt wrong to not note it down. With both collections boasting some enviable design and innovation, it’s certainly worth taking note of for a little bout of inspiration too.
