The Year Of Power Dressing

If 2014 was the year of the beehive, it’s safe to say so far in 2018, it’s been the year of the beret.

Maybe it’s the fact that since joining the fringe brigade we seem to also have winds of 20mph+, but I’m definitely still adapting- and plonking on a hat not only ties an outfit together nicely, but protects my modesty when I simply haven’t had time in the morning. Ahem.

Plus, there’s something I’m genuinely quite enjoying about the serious eighties power dressing that’s everywhere at the moment. Once an era that was written off for debatable lycra (before American Apparel attempted to revive it), too big shoulders and more sticky Wella hairspray than a whole aisle at Sally’s- the shoulder pads may not have totally disappeared (see exhibit a) but it’s the fusing of old and new, the muted nods to Parisian style that tone everything down, and the modern feminine tailoring that take the Dynasty out of the trend and throw in something a little more 2018. And in my opinion, there’s something quite anti-fashion about the eighties having a moment too. Being the era you’re most likely to find in charity and vintage shops, there’s a nod that genuinely feels like an authentic throwback to these pieces too.

Perhaps it’s the fact this jacket is genuinely a vintage find, and one I’ve been completely besotted with since it arrived- and, if there’s one thing I know will never go out of fashion, it’s the unrivalled feeling of finding a vintage gem so perfect that fits like a dream. After it arriving from the wonderful Olive Vintage I was extremely keen to parade it around- pairing it with a simple turtle neck, flared & other stories jeans and my bag of dreams from Mother of Pearl too.

With the whole look being a bit of a fusion between Gossip Girl, a Chanel tribute and (I-will-not-say-Julia-Roberts-I-will-not-say-Julia-Roberts) something of a 1984 power player- it’s amazing what a good outfit can do for your confidence. Now to tackle my inbox wearing tweed and a pussy bow and I think we have a recipe for success!
