From The Archive: 2016

The year of travel- from Aus to Africa- as well as some of my favourite ever photos, I hope 2016 brings a small dose of wanderlust (and fashion inspiration if not)!

Asia Travel

Visiting Koh Samui

…and my first visit to Asia!

When, last November, an email dropped into my inbox about the opportunity to visit Thailand I couldn’t quite believe my luck. Me? Fly 13 hours across the world? TO THAILAND? Y’wot mate? I’d heard so many beautiful things about the country, that just the thought of visiting was enough to have me rummaging around for my passport and weighing up my hand baggage allowance- keen, me? Although it was a 13 hour flight (read: the longest this Nervous Purvis has flown around the world), each moment was fuelled by excitement, and the thought of being in such a vibrant, lively and culturally rich place (with REAL coconut trees) was enough to calm any jitters.

The first stop on the trip was a couple of days at the beautiful island of Koh Samui, staying at beachfront resort Vana Belle– part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection, which aim to ‘Define the Destination’ by giving each guest a completely personal, authentic and local perspective experiences. Even upon arrival, Vana Belle was by far one of the most beautiful resorts I’ve ever had the privilege of staying at. From stepping into my room (which had it’s own infinity pool, that had me IRL pinching myself), sampling the Thai afternoon tea and experiencing the spa- I couldn’t quite believe how breathtaking it was. Although the island is renown for it’s nightlife and being popular with tourists, the resort was perfectly private (without ever feeling empty) and felt like a special secret spot we’d magically stumbled across. Spoilt? Maybe a little…

During our stay we were taken around to discover some other local beauty spots, paying visit to a stunning local Buddhist temple, Fisherman’s Village and the gorgeous beach front bar Coco Tams by moonlight- as well as a beachside barbecue releasing Khom Loy’s and a cooking class in the hotel- which, for a Thai food novice like me (yup, I had tried little more than a green curry before this trip)- was a complete treat, and it’s safe to say I am now firmly converted to Thai cuisine (well, there’s a surprise)…

Before we left again for Bangkok- we also gave a Thai yoga class a go- and it’s safe to say I am not going to be a wellness (or fitness) blogger any time soon. But the less said about that the better! My first taste of Thailand couldn’t have been any more special, and the people were some of the kindest, most warm people I’d ever met. Our next stop was Bangkok and Loy Krathong, so stay tuned later this week for more!

Many thanks to Starwood Hotels, Luxury Collection and Vana Belle Koh Samui for having me as a guest, all opinions are as always my own
