I’m not sure anything can prepare you for a city as vibrant, energetic and full on as Bangkok. Having visited Las Vegas a couple of years ago, I had a good idea of what a ‘lively’ place felt like (maybe it’s something to do with The Hangover), but landing amongst the heat, energy and high rises of Bangkok was absolutely something else. It oozed modern, slick feelings of cities like New York, with more gritty rural riverside areas that were completely conflicting to any other parts of the city- but each pocket as amazing as the next…
After driving from the airport across to the central area of the city and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, A Luxury Collection Hotel, (our beautiful home for the next couple of evenings)- we explored the hotel (home to one of the best Italian restaurants in Bangkok FYI- a big thumbs up from Liv and a tropical poolside garden) before treating ourselves to a little down time (which may be a direct translation from: massages) before a busy day preparing for Loy Krathong the next day.
With the next day focussing around a visit to one of Bangkok’s main flower markets, we spent the morning exploring the city by long tail boat along the river. It was incredible watching the locals travel about by longboat (with a couple of women selling gifts and souvenirs next to us), and certainly felt quicker than attempting to weave in and out of the traffic, or ahem, TFL (even if we did feel frighteningly close to the water)!
Our itinerary included making pit stops at the Royal Barges Museum, Museum of Floral Culture and a delicious lunch break at local favourite Arua Apsorn (you know it’s a good ‘un when you’re the only non-locals there). Here this gal sampled tofu for this first time (I know it’s not a local delicacy and it doesn’t deserve three cheers, but y’know- baby steps) as well plates of freshly cooked fish, delicious sticky rice dishes and their famous crab- all before hot footing it for a tuk tuk ride to the flower market- but more on that tomorrow!
